Red Poppies is an abstract study I recently painted in preparation for a large commission. 5' x 3' to be exact. Which is now hanging in a lovely home nearby. It was a nice experience and appreciate, designer friends Marsha and Christy, for presenting the opportunity.

Walk On

through many iterations (such a non-cowboy word) over
two weeks and it's still not close to my intention but couldn't
not meet the deadline. It's a subject I'll revisit . . .

I met Kermit several years ago while visiting home one summer. My brother had kept a newspaper article for me about a man who had left his successful career to return home to SW Louisiana and begin a career as a longhorn cattleman. I boldly called him and explained that I was interested in photographing his longhorn cattle for future paintings. We had 3 cameras working and took well over 800 photos...click and shoot, edit later...what did we do before digital photography? Not only did I leave Kermit's ranch with an abundance of material for paintings, but he would not let us leave without a huge bag filled with an assortment of longhorn steaks! If you've never been to Louisiana, you're missing out on meeting some of the kindest people around.

Texas Cowboy

This is not my best effort, as I do not yet do much figure painting. But I wanted to get it posted before the end of the month. Cowboys are fun to paint, though, and I hope to do some more. There are plenty of them around here - real cowboys and the drugstore type too.

I've been trying to come up with an appropriate painting for the Cowboy Up theme this month, and then I remembered my yucca, which most assuredly at some point in its bloom had a cowboy ride by, don't you think? I fell in love with these giant plants when I started making my sojourns down to Fredericksburg to deliver art to The Good Art Company Gallery a few years ago. They have the brightest white blossoms at the top, and seem to be the favorite entryway plant for all of the driveways of the Hill Country, next to the cactus and rocks.

Hello, Cupcake! by Carol Morgan

Decided a while ago to paint a single large cupcake with LOTS of impasto! The frosting sticks out about 3/4 of an inch and I'm sure it will take forever to thoroughly dry! It was a lot of fun and would be perfect for a kitchen, girly girl's bedroom, or a playroom. It is just a light piece of fluff!

The January challenge for Some Texas Artists Like To Paint is Cowboy Up. This term originated in the rodeo. When a cowboy was ready to leave the stall it was yelled, "Cowboy Up!" From there it has come to mean that when life is tough, you don't complain and whine, but you pick yourself up and keep going.

This hat reminds me of my grandfather (we called him Dad) who was a rancher in Gustine, Texas. Dad wore a white Stetson (this hat is not a Stetson). He had difficult times in his life. Work was hard and he took his responsibilities seriously. Dad was a respected and loved person. "Cowboy Up" was not in his venacular, but believe me he did "Cowboy Up" every time a problem crossed his path.

This was inspired by an Ansel Adams photograph, so of course I had to make up all the colors from out of my head, but it was the perfect tool for an exercise in getting the values right.
When I had the original digitzed for reprinting I was told "yellows are the hardest colors to get right in printing", but I'd say the reprints are right on the money.

This is another from my "Hwy 95" series done from a photo taken on "The Great Sausage Expedition". The photo was taken at Latitude 30.371885/Longitude-97.371178 which puts it not far south of Taylor, TX. I've been interested more and more in things that repeat themselves in an image and when I saw this row of haybales I thought "Yep, that'll do just fine."

Greetings, friends, Sharon Hodges here. I am new to this blog, and this is my first post. Our topic this month is 'cowboy up', so here is my offering......

I totally love the rodeo...the cowboys, the animals, the characters in the stands, the kids, the clowns, the whole big, crazy spectacle. I especially love the odd names of the bulls, and this one is no exception. Eight seconds is a lifetime if you are on the back of a really agitated, massive bull like this one. The cowboy did not win this engagement, but he gave it a great ride.

Dying Oak - Kirk Witmer

This was painted from a photo I took back in October when a buddy and I went on a "Sausage Expedition" to buy the necessities for his retirement celebration. It's a view from Hwy 95, not far north of Elgin, and south of Taylor, Texas. We bought sausage in both towns and they were distinctly different. The jury's still out on which one's better. ;)
This piece will be among my offerings on my eBay store, but I've decided for several reasons to postpone its opening until probably February.

01/11/11 Just a Little "Wanna-be" by Carol Morgan

As a little girl, I wanted to be Roy Rogers! This painting is sort of a self portrait of me when I was 4 or 5. I loved to dress up and pretend, even then I had a marvelous imagination, to be Roy, Dale or even Gabby Hayes! Evidently my father got a kick our of it because he took this picture one morning when I was in my flannel pj's and awaiting my favorite show!

This is my entry for Cowboy Up -- hope you enjoyed it.

This painting is dedicated to my nephew, Casey Settles. I used a 2008 photograph of him and Dipped N Vip (yes, that is the horse's name) as a reference for this contemporary oil painting. The brush strokes are loose and don't have much of detail. The photograph I was using was taken indoors, but I put Casey and the horse outdoors. I am told that Dipped N Vip is a very special horse, and it is owned by Black Hawk Community College, located in Illinois. He is very handsome and had great colors. Casey is a student at West Texas A & M, and captain of the Equestrian Team. We will go see him at the Inter-Collegiate Horse Show and Regionals in Gainesville, Texas next month. (I can't wait to take some great pictures!)

This painting has changed so much since I started it.....and it has been through alot, just like a cowboy. My reference for Time to Cowboy Up was my nephew Casey Settles...trying to put his chaps on for a horse show. I wanted to do more with the fringe, but was afraid that I might over-paint it. This painting was inspired from a photograph that I took of my nephew, Casey...taken about a year ago. He was getting ready to ride in a competition, and my camera caught him putting his chaps on. He need alot of help because they were very tight, and had to have two people working on those chaps. The rodeo arena was in the background, but I wanted it to be abstract and only a suggestion of the fence and the ground. I used oil sticks and oil paints with my wide brushes. I had alot of fun with this painting, and I might start a cowboy series. I love this month's subject matter!!! Thanks for viewing. Kay
