Lobster Bisque ..... is there a better soup?  I had this wonderful delicacy in Portland, Oregon at Higgins.   The fragrance of the lobster, cream, sherry and a hint of garlic was enticing. I thought of this soup when Some Texas Artists Like to Paint offered this month's challenge.

Reach Out Sunflower Solo was one of several demos I completed at my Summer Saturday Sunflower Workshop this past weekend. What a great day to spend with students who shared my unabashed and unashamed and just a bit over the top infatuation with sunflowers! I mean, okay, one of us even admitted she has sunflowers painted on my her kitchen door.

In the midst of all these sunflower confessions and before painting commenced and yellow paint began to fly hither and yon, we enjoyed a SURPRISE sunflower bundt cake - lemon with creme cheese icing! This delish concoction for my students was the idea of the hubby, who was on hand to help us set up tables and the indispensable Keurig coffee machine. (Note - the bumblebees on top were cardboard cutouts. No real bumblebees were harmed in the making of this cake.)

Dance by the Light Sunflowers and Daisies is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and was named for the late, late hour last night that I worked on this painting. I promise I was not dancing at 2 am when I washed my brushes. You do not want to see me dancing. My sister Julie does all the dancing in our family. The larkspur in this painting have filled my studio with a lovely fragrance, although this flower does love to leave quite a mess in the water and on the tabletop around it after about a day under the spotlight!

I had been saving this 20X24 New Traditions Art Panel for something special, and when I put together my arrangement of white and red daisies (with a few sunflowers sprinkled in) I loved the color combo and decided it was time to paint on the expensive canvas! So I gathered up my courage and told myself as I put the precious canvas on my easel - okay, if I mess this up, worst case scenario, I just buy another expensive canvas!

New Life

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! II Corinthians 5:17

This scripture has special meaning for me. When I starting painting, “A New Life” I was thinking that a butterfly was a symbol of new life. Something that is new, fresh, colorful and full of life.

I started painting this butterfly about a year and a half ago. At that time, my mother of 83 years was in failing health, and her decline in health was evident. I was painting along, thinking that a butterfly was a beautiful creature, and suddenly I was called away. My mother had passed away. It was expected, but unexpected. It was a sorrowful time for our family.

When I returned to the unfinished canvas, I recalled the memorial service for my mother, and one of the scripture readings was II Corinthians 5:17. I could now go ahead and finish the painting. I needed to put new life and color on the canvas. Knowing that God is with us. The painting was hanging during the RLBC Arts Festival last year, and then sold during the show.

I have to admit I wasn't looking forward to attempting this challenge, but once I got into it ...... ok I still didn't like it.  At first I thought it would be a good exercise in loosening up, but instead I painted very slow and just tried to keep my painting looking like an apple.  I cheated at the end by adding a couple of lines with a palette knife.  Painting slowly was frustrating and I kept wanting to transfer my brush quickly to my right hand.  However, I'm happy with the final outcome and was pleasantly surprised that an apple emerged from my left hand.  Will wonders never cease?!!!  So, all in all, I liked this challenge more than I thought I would. :-)

especially if you are painting with your other hand!!!

I have not participated lately in our monthly challenges, but was grateful for Spring Break to rest, relax, and finally paint! I loved this "paint with your other hand" challenge and I do hope you will try this out. I did 2 paintings for this challenge and will try to get the other one posted by the end of the week. I began each painting with a blank canvas and using my left hand, sketched a few reference points and just had fun. I absolutely could not paint with my other hand until I sat on my right hand, it needed to be out of my way. So much fun, I hope you try this exercise!

Wow, this challenge really challenged me. I did everything with my left hand....the hardest thing for me was mixing the paints. I do not like to use straight oils out of the tube. I started putting colors and shapes on the panel, and found that I had two women and dog floating here in this painting. It was a good exercise....and NO COMFORT ZONE was present. Kay

Quick Bra Study by Kay Wyne

Here you go....the bra challenge.....I think I would of enjoyed it if I had more time. But I decided that I liked the back view of the bra. I painted with oils on a 9" x 12" canvas. Maybe I will try another quick painting. Thanks to a friend....of course no names right now..... for the turquoise bra. I guess one good thing about this challenge is that it pushes us out of our comfort zone!!!!!

Getting ready to paint...

Since this is the last day of the month, I still have time to paint the bra challenge. I don't want anyone to think that I haven't been working on this...I really have put some thought into it. Here is a pic of the dressmaker's form with a colorful bra and Mardi Gras beads. I thought the beads really jazzed it up. Now that it has taken me a month to put it all together, the pressure is on.....more tomorrow. Kay

This month's challenge is "BRA."  I submitted the challenge and I'm happy that it was chosen.  It is a different still life that most artists paint and that is one reason I thought it would be a good subject.  In addition to that reason, I chose this topic because back in June of July when we were asked to submit challenge topics my daughter-in-law had been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Bras were on my mind!  By the way, she has completed chemo and breast reconstruction and is doing great!

February Challenge!

Alrighty. Bras. Well I don't know what to think about this topic. And nobody has posted a bra painting.....I guess I have my work cut out for me today. I think it is only fair that the crazy artist who picked this monthly topic would be the first to post a painting......so who is that crazy artist??? Have an artful day......Kay

Invitation to my Show

My friend Ann Hardy and I have a two man show opening Feb. 9th from 6:00 - 8:00 in the Chan Sun Library on the campus of Southwestern Adventist University. The show runs from the 9th -23rd of February. The address is 101 W. Magnolia, Keene, TX 76059. I think Ann will have at least 20 oil paintings and I will have 14 bronze sculptures. JEAN - A Texas Mug!

This is Jean Townsend, a fabulous Texas artist (an introduction, just in case you haven't met her) and member of this blog.  We've been promising each other to send photos of each other to paint and we finally did.  And I have to tell you that I had a blast painting Jean's mug.  She sent 3 great photos (and, yes I am going to paint them all - maybe more than once).  In this reference photograph, Jean wore a huge frown and smudged lipstick.  Just wonderful!  I've painted this not only for my pleasure and blog, but for Some Texas Artists Like To Paint.  The January challenge is mug shots.  Please check out Jean's blog!
