How did December arrive so quickly?  Our tree is up and decorated and more decorations will be added this evening.  Some presents have been bought and are ready to be wrapped.  Still more to be purchased, cookies to be baked, cards to send.  Christmas is almost here!!  Busy and exciting!

A Million Kisses Red Roses is the newest work in Flower Mound Studio, as the days move closer to the the time of year I love most. I wanted to go a bit overboard with the color on this painting, break a few rules, and splash some paint around just for the sheer joy of it. I paint every day not just because it's good for my work, but because life is short and you should spend it doing something you feel absolutely passionate about.  I also have a trusty little helper who can always be relied upon to give me a giggle. Qiang Huang set this week's Daily Paintworks challenge as the "Color of Blue."  To add to the challenge the painting should be high key and no red or orange is to be used as a contrast.  I immediately thought of my husband's shirt.  I painted it on a panel with a black ground on it.  I like it!  Thanks for a great challenge!

Today was the last day of my flower painting workshop in Irving, Texas, and we painted fast and loose and made white roses and holly berries bloom! With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, we shared some of our favorite must-have dishes that would be served next week. I am pretty sure I'm going to show up on Nancy Standlee's doorstep unannounced to sample one of the multiple chocolate pies she said she will be making! I told Carlos if he really loved me, he would learn to make pies and pastries. So far no luck. I'll keep you posted if he realized how truly serious I am about this...!

The geraniums in my yard are in full bloom, convinced that spring has arrived and they have months and months of sunshine ahead. I'm not going to tell them otherwise! I'm going to celebrate! Lobster Bisque ..... is there a better soup?  I had this wonderful delicacy in Portland, Oregon at Higgins.   The fragrance of the lobster, cream, sherry and a hint of garlic was enticing. I thought of this soup when Some Texas Artists Like to Paint offered this month's challenge.

I have to admit I wasn't looking forward to attempting this challenge, but once I got into it ...... ok I still didn't like it.  At first I thought it would be a good exercise in loosening up, but instead I painted very slow and just tried to keep my painting looking like an apple.  I cheated at the end by adding a couple of lines with a palette knife.  Painting slowly was frustrating and I kept wanting to transfer my brush quickly to my right hand.  However, I'm happy with the final outcome and was pleasantly surprised that an apple emerged from my left hand.  Will wonders never cease?!!!  So, all in all, I liked this challenge more than I thought I would. :-)  

A final word ..... 

especially if you are painting with your other hand!!!

This month's challenge is "BRA."  I submitted the challenge and I'm happy that it was chosen.  It is a different still life that most artists paint and that is one reason I thought it would be a good subject.  In addition to that reason, I chose this topic because back in June of July when we were asked to submit challenge topics my daughter-in-law had been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Bras were on my mind!  By the way, she has completed chemo and breast reconstruction and is doing great!

Blue, blue, my world is blue...and white...and yellow...and a touch of red! As a collector of blue and white china and pottery, you mention the color blue and these china pieces come to mind.

The timing of the "upside down" theme for the month of July is just perfect since I just painted this watermelon painting for the Daily PaintWorks blog. The weekly challenge was to paint from a photograph but do it upside down (the photo, not the artist). Amazing that when you do this, you concentrate more on shapes and spacial differences rather than on objects. When you finally finish and flip the painting, wow, what a surprise! A great exercise, give it a try!  

By the way, "Happy First Birthday" to Some Texas Artists Like to Paint! Hard to believe that we started this blog one year ago!

This is a painting from a still life class last year - I'm bringing it back around for our "tool" theme this month. It's a perfect example of subjects I would never have thought to put together but when your brilliant teacher does it, voila! You walk into the studio and the set-up looks great - paint away!
