Wow, this challenge really challenged me. I did everything with my left hand....the hardest thing for me was mixing the paints. I do not like to use straight oils out of the tube. I started putting colors and shapes on the panel, and found that I had two women and dog floating here in this painting. It was a good exercise....and NO COMFORT ZONE was present. Kay

Here you go....the bra challenge.....I think I would of enjoyed it if I had more time. But I decided that I liked the back view of the bra. I painted with oils on a 9" x 12" canvas. Maybe I will try another quick painting. Thanks to a friend....of course no names right now..... for the turquoise bra. I guess one good thing about this challenge is that it pushes us out of our comfort zone!!!!!

Since this is the last day of the month, I still have time to paint the bra challenge. I don't want anyone to think that I haven't been working on this...I really have put some thought into it. Here is a pic of the dressmaker's form with a colorful bra and Mardi Gras beads. I thought the beads really jazzed it up. Now that it has taken me a month to put it all together, the pressure is on.....more tomorrow. Kay

This month's challenge is "BRA." I submitted the challenge and I'm happy that it was chosen. It is a different still life that most artists paint and that is one reason I thought it would be a good subject. In addition to that reason, I chose this topic because back in June of July when we were asked to submit challenge topics my daughter-in-law had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Bras were on my mind! By the way, she has completed chemo and breast reconstruction and is doing great!

My friend Ann Hardy and I have a two man show opening Feb. 9th from 6:00 - 8:00 in the Chan Sun Library on the campus of Southwestern Adventist University. The show runs from the 9th -23rd of February. The address is 101 W. Magnolia, Keene, TX 76059. I think Ann will have at least 20 oil paintings and I will have 14 bronze sculptures. Mistah Chu is a very spoiled pug who lives in Arizona with his family. He spends his time basking by the pool, eating, and napping indoors by the AC when the weather gets warm. He's about the best example of a mug shot I have in my repertoire, although my own pug Howie, is much more likely to end up in a police station lineup for breaking the law than Mistah Chu. Mistah Chu's mom assures me he is, most of the time, an absolute angel.

Do you remember bubble lights? These were my favorite a very long time ago, many years before the white, twinkling lights became so popular. Along with the bubble lights were the large bulbs in lots of different colors. They made for a delightful Christmas tree for children. I painted this for the December challenge - Vintage Christmas . Although, these decorations are vintage and I remember them, I am NOT, and I repeat NOT vintage!!

Little Man ~ Rooster, is a new painting drying on the easel in Flower Mound Studio. I've been wanting to paint chickens for weeks, they are as colorful as flowers and just as unpredictable. We had fresh eggs from the chickens we raised growing up. My Dad named our little farm The Briar Patch and each of us girls was assigned certain chores, and each had a different animal to take care of. The chickens lived in a little A-framed coop surrounded (aptly) by a pen of chicken wire. Every morning we would gather warm brown eggs from the coop, they were large and sometimes there would be double yolkers. The egg yolks were a deep, warm yellow color, nothing like the watery yellow of store-bought eggs. I'd like to tell you that life on the farm was glamorous and chickens were cuddley, but neither of those statements were true. What was true was that I would not change my childhood for anything, growing up out in the country, away from the city, was a beautiful way to develop imagination and wonder. Most of all, it was a great way to learn to love nature and the creatures of this earth. I am thankful for that time in my life, it was so unspoiled. The pugs and I wish every one of you a happy Thanksgiving holiday. I am thankful for your friendship and for the comments and thoughts you share. I hope you have loved ones nearby today!

HOME GROWN

I have the fondest memories of my grandparents love for gardening. Fruit and vegetables were rarely, if ever, purchased at the grocery store, instead all was grown with their loving hands. Their surplus was shared with all and what could not be shared was "put up" for the months ahead. I, on the other hand, depend on the grocery bins and the local farmer's market for my fresh produce.

Carol, this painting is for you for the Texas Moleskin Round-Up. I had to double-dip and borrow the What's for Dinner theme and use it for your Sides theme, too. Folks, I'm so sorry I missed the last couple of months, hopefully I can catch up and participate now.

Fire in the Sky Blue Iris is the newest work in Flower Mound Studio, as I finish up new inventory lists for paintings heading to the Texas Hill Country this weekend. The pugs are tickled pink their Aunt Bitsy is staying with them this weekend, since she finds ways to spoil them rotten that defy the imagination. Watching movies, sleeping late, snacks in the kitchen, there is no end to the delights that await them once Aunty is in charge, according to Howie, who says he would like to trade his mom for Aunty.

AnnieBee, of course, will be joining us for the trip, and leaving her brothers at home, out of the public eye where they belong. After all, she directs all gallery related activities. Annie doesn't actually select the paintings that will be packed and shipped, but she does occasionally roll her ball behind one of them (an occurrence that results in loud commands and insults if I fail to quickly retrieve the ball as she has trained me to do.) The trip is always more fun with Annie along. I'm sure she'll be rewarded for her toil with a new toy and cookie for the long ride home.

This is stretching the theme of "Back In School".....but a new box of Crayolas always brings back memories of going out and getting school supplies. This piece was a fun and interesting project for me....it was originally exhibited at the McKinney Aveue Contemporary for the membership show. The theme was "Fifteen". The artists are Charles William (Faciall) and myself. I met Charles through the Stewpot Art Program where I volunteer, and we thought it would be fun to work on a piece together...from start to finish. We discussed several different ideas, and one day Charles found a plastic bucket of fifteen colorful chalks. We took them outside on blistering day, and had a photograph session and played with the chalk on the hot concrete in the 105 degree Texas heat. So we had our inspiration and a reference photograph to work from.

We wanted to create something that was fun and exciting. Charles is a very talented artist who works in acrylics...and I needed to adapt to the acrylics since it had been years since I painted in acrylics. I love my oils. Anyway, we got a 48" x 48" canvas and started painting...we had to talk about it all...usually Charles and I sit down in front of the canvas and the art just pours out. We really don't discuss it...but we both needed to make sure that what we were dong was alright with the other. Soon the piece became mixed media and we added chalk and pastels to the paint to give it a chalky effect.

This collaboration was a great experience for both of us. I think we learned alot about art and about ourselves. We exchanged our views on painting methods and techniques, and exchanged conversation about our daily lives. Charles is a an extremely gifted artist, and unique individual. It was an honor to paint with Charles on this canvas. I would encourage you to visit the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas Stewpot website:http://thestewpot.org/art.asp. The Open Art Studio is a community outreach serving the at-risk populations of Dallas. It is open to all people looking for an environment to express and create through the medium of art. Currently, this piece is hanging at Royal Lane Baptist Church.

Hold Tight Sunflowers is a small painting that got a big facelift today. I was in a celebratory mood because I finished that big container garden painting in two days. My feet hurt, my back muscles are screaming, but my heart is happy! Summer Blossoms Container Garden will be the centerpiece of my show at The Good Art Company Gallery on Friday, August 5. I'm so excited about the show, this will be my first featured artist night in the new gallery space on Main Street. I even thought about buying a dress for the occasion, but then remembered I will be hold her majesty, AnnieBee, most of the evening, so visions of a lovely black halter dress were gone with the wind. Besides, I'm white as a fish, with absolutely no arm muscle tone from skipping the gym for studio time. What was I thinking??

This is where I'd like to be. Warm breezes, cool morning, anticipating lots of fun during the day. This painting really called my name! So simple yet it can be challenging to paint!

The sky and ocean have a lot of the same colors so I usually check a painting by turning it upside down! It really sharpens up a painting and any difficult shapes you can't quite get. Try it!

This one was elusive. Not the painting, but photographing it! I took more than twenty photos trying to capture the glow on this celestial body and this seems to be the best of the lot. I'm still not sure this does it justice. If you like this image, you should see it in person.
But again, this is another study in preparation for a larger painting.
So what's this picture have to do with this month's theme of "Upside Down"? This image is actually upside down from the way it sat on my easel as I painted it.

The timing of the "upside down" theme for the month of July is just perfect since I just painted this watermelon painting for the Daily PaintWorks blog. The weekly challenge was to paint from a photograph but do it upside down (the photo, not the artist). Amazing that when you do this, you concentrate more on shapes and spacial differences rather than on objects. When you finally finish and flip the painting, wow, what a surprise! A great exercise, give it a try!

The Chosen is a departure from my usual paintings. I began drawing women in dresses and ballgowns in the fourth grade, when my dream of being a fashion designer first began. My first year of college that notion was dispelled when I learned I had to embrace home furnishings in the mix, and learn how to tell a Louis the XIV chair from a chaise lounge. This was a fun painting, and I drew on my watercolor background to lay in a nice soft background, reminiscent of the flowers of the Dallas Arboretum.

This little guy was sunning for the first time and his Nanny put this cute hat on this precious baby. He just looked so content sitting there like a little Buddah !! He is definitely a waterbaby. Well now he is 3 or 4 years old and I bet he still loves the water. I know his momma loved the painting.

I looked at Carolyn Anderson's paintings before attempting this
daunting challenge, which isn't really evident here. This lovely child
was visiting her grandparents a few weeks ago and Regina Taylor
caught this pose with her camera. I started getting the hang of it when
I got to her hand and learned a lot . . . wanted to try again before
posting but May is quickly disappearing!

Liza is my goddaughter. I photographed her playing one afternoon on the beach, and loved the colors in the sand and, most of all, her shadow. The shadow is my favorite part of the painting.

This is Zoe, the oldest little girl of one of my teacher friends. I had to dig into my past to pull this one up because I am consumed with school for at least the next week. Zoe was only my third painting and second one of a child. I think the world of this couple and love their children so I ended up painting them often. Zoe is ready for the first grade next year and loves school. She is a girly girl that loves to paint my toenails with "glow in the dark" nail polish when I stay with them so mom and dad can have an occasional night out! What fun!!

This father and son caught my eye at the Arboretum last summer...the boy had been playing in the frog fountain and had something in his foot. He quickly crawled up into his dad's lap and knew it would be all better soon. This was such a tender moment and the light was so pretty that it encouraged me to try to paint these figures, even though I had never painted figures before.

Well, I've had to pull from the archives for this category because my entire life right now is consumed with school and more school. This is one of my students, Madyson, signing the word adore from the hymn, Lift High the Cross. As we are introduced each month to a new hymn, one of our teachers teaches the children sign language. In addition to hearing their sweet voices, it is truly a beautiful thing to watch children "singing" with their hands.

I recently learned that this painting is one of three that has been accepted to hang in a museum in honor of one of my late professors, Elemore Morgan, Jr. To pay tribute to a most beloved mentor, teacher, and friend, the museum is honoring him through works of his former students and I am thrilled to be included in the year long show. Here is a video of this kind, soft spoken gentleman, speaking about his love for art and the rice fields he so loved to paint. Years ago when we were first married, my husband and I sat in one of Elemore's favorite rice fields for a portrait, his wedding present to us; wow!

Our Texas beaches are just the best for people-watching. This precious little one's family spent the day set-up right next to ours last summer in Port Aransas. She was a busy little bee and thoroughly entertaining to watch. I knew the minute I saw her pink bathing suit reflected in surf that I'd paint her time and again. Happy May all!

This was a commission I completed last year when a friend had her son's photo taken professionally. I got permission from the artist and dove right in! Benjamin is lovingly called Banjo by his parents and is such a lovely child that I couldn't resist the urge to paint him. I think I was able to capture his intensity and thoughtfulness in this painting. It was a lot of fun to paint!

This is my neighbor's grandson, Christopher. I was just working on a monochromatic level blocking him in and I liked it so much that I left it as it was. If you've ever done this as an exercise, it is very interesting and can be challenging. At the last minute I gave his cheeks a bit of color and used a palette knife on his blonde hair. The whole effect was widely approved by my painting friends in the studio, so I "Stepped away from the canvas."

The children dress appropriately and experience a range of activities, like writing with a quill pen, making butter, and washing clothes with a washboard, a very handy tool back in the day.

For this month's challenge I'm submitting this painting of a Hopi kachina. The word kachina has many meanings, the dolls that were originally given to their children, the masked dancers and the spirits that the dolls and dancers represent. The dolls were played with, of course, but they were a tool to teach the children about their religion. This is a painting I did of a fairly old Ogre Woman kachina, that I bought in a gallery in Albuquerque many years ago. The Ogre Woman comes to the Hopi mesas with other ogres bringing corn for the girls to grind and traps for the boys to catch mice. The children are told that the girls must grind the corn well, and the boys catch the mice that eat the Hopi's grain, by the time the Ogres return, or they will take the children away, to eat (hence the scary eyes and sharp teeth.) The purpose of this is to teach the children the roles they will have as adults, the boys as hunters and the girls as grinders of corn who can prepare food for their famalies.

It's a perfect example of subjects I would never have thought to put together but when your brilliant teacher does it, voila! You walk into the studio and the set-up looks great - paint away! I ordered a quiche and a glass of wine at an open cafe, Deux Magots, and this precious wren landed on my table and I just had to snap his photo. The tools I used to cut the flaky quiche are pointing right to my little feathered friend.

The challenge this month for Some Texas Artists Like to Paint is "tools" suggested by Lorraine Shirkus. It's a fantastic subject and fun to find a tool that would be good to paint. My problem was narrowing down what I found! I want to visit this subject again as the tools just around the house are endless. I had to make a decision and because I use these pliers often in the studio to remove stubborn caps on paint tubes I knew this would be the first tool for me to paint. Sometimes our everyday tools are over looked. What tools do you have that you would paint?

What a perfect Saturday. After getting Anniebelly and Howard's teeth all polished and cleaned at the Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue no-anesthesia dental event, we dropped off the puggies and went to the nursery! I had a plan - create a painting based on the Some Texas Artists Like to Paint Challenge this month. The topic - tools. My goal - find the perfect setup to paint a little gardening tool! So off we went. I love Flower Mound Calloways Nursery! Have I mentioned that before? The nursery was packed. You could see the gleem of excitement in all the Flower Moundians' beady little eyes! When I think of tools, I think of the annual tool sale at Sears (gee, I love October), and then I think of the tools in my dad's workshop, and then my mind wandered off into 'tools of the trade'...this painting is from a photo I shot in a potter's studio. Her workbench was littered with her many mixing bowls, glazing powders, and secret formulas...all the tools of her trade. This is one of my early paintings, but I thought I'd be brave and post it anyway. Now, I'll get to thinking about other ideas for 'tools'!

I had no idea how I was going to interpret Jean's challenge
for this month until I saw the photos I took of myself in a
mirror . . . there was just the right combination of personality
and vacancy. I've only tried one self-portrait recently from life
and know what an uncooperative model I am, hence the photos.
I felt less than hopeful beginning it and then found I enjoyed
handling paint in this light-touch way. The paint pretty much
assembled itself into a face and I didn't feel the slightest need
to impose my will onto it. Can't wait to try again tomorrow!

I took a picture of Kay on a painting trip our studio took to Dr. John Martin's farm about two years ago. We all had a wonderful day of painting and were enjoying ourselves. As you can see, Kay's glass is only half full of wine so she was well on her way to relaxing! Wonderful memories of wonderful times with good friends.
